Brown was also featured in Santa Fe Trail (1940), where he is the VILLAIN - but not, I suggest, for the reasons you might expect.

It's common to interpret it as a pro-slavery movie, but in my reading (I wrote an article on it for the film journal Bright Lights a while back) Brown is the villain because he's a *disruptive* force, not doing things by the book, rather than specifically because he wants to free slaves.

In fact, one character says words to the effect of "his goal is morally right, but he's going about it the wrong way".

Even so, Brown is still a very odd choice of historical figure to demonise in that way...
